Expectations run high at Cards' camp

Spring Training has arrived, and the Cardinals open camp on Thursday morning with something special, something both coveted and dreaded: high expectations.
For the first time in at least three seasons, St. Louis begins Spring Training as the favorite in the National League Central. So as the Redbirds officially begin camp at Roger Dean Stadium, they do so with a little extra buzz surrounding them. Manager Tony La Russa, of course, has high expectations for his club every year. But for fans coming out to Roger Dean Stadium, the feeling will be a little different this spring.
For plenty of players, the work is already under way. A number of pitchers reported last week or even earlier, and they've already begun throwing. The rest were scheduled to report on Wednesday. Some infielders and outfielders have arrived as well, as has the entire coaching staff. "Report day" has become something of a misnomer.
Even so, it's all been informal up to this point. The first fully structured workout for pitchers and catchers, with uniforms and a La Russa-written schedule, is Thursday. Infielders and outfielders begin working out on Tuesday.
"Any time you can see the season around the corner, it's a good feeling," said pitcher Mitchell Boggs, who will be vying for a spot in either the starting rotation or the bullpen. "The offseason becomes pretty long. You don't do all the workouts and stuff like that for nothing. I look forward to it, and it should be a good opportunity."
Joining Boggs in the competition for a pitching roster spot is right-hander Josh Kinney, who has endured a great deal of difficulty since starring in the 2006 run to the World Series title. Kinney made 17 big league appearances with an 8.80 ERA in 2009. But he said he's healthy and feeling good, and looking forward to contributing.
"Last year didn't work out the way I wanted it to," Kinney said. "But it was a good year, [because] I pitched a year. I'm proud of that. I didn't go on the DL. I got that over with, and now it's time to refine everything, I guess would be the way to say it."
It's one of the most exciting times of the year, not just for pitchers like Kinney and Boggs, but for anyone who loves baseball. The winter has ended, metaphorically at least, and spring is starting. Photographs and videos of palm trees and pitch-and-catch sessions have begun making their way north and west from southeastern Florida as the Cardinals prepare to defend their NL Central title.
For the first five days, pitchers and catchers will work out. They'll throw bullpen sessions and work on conditioning and defense. Those who are farther along may have some catchers stand in to swing. Full-squad workouts begin on Tuesday, and shortly thereafter, the hitters will start taking their hacks against pitchers.
From there, it's a bit of a wait -- and for players, one of the longest waits of the year. It's nine days of full-squad workouts before Grapefruit League play begins. The Cards open their exhibition schedule on Thursday, March 4 against the Mets at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Their first home game of the spring is the next day against the Mets.
The Grapefruit League schedule stretches through April 1 before the team flies north. The Cardinals will inaugurate the Twins' new stadium with two exhibition games against Minnesota on April 2 and 3. Opening Day comes April 5 in Cincinnati, with the home opener set for April 12 against the Astros at Busch Stadium.
Before that, though, it's camp. The Cardinals will be trying to answer several questions. They need to identify their fifth starting pitcher. They need to settle on a third baseman -- or a division of labor at third base. They need to figure out when Brendan Ryan will be ready, and if his regular-season debut is delayed, who will fill in for him. And they need to sort out just about their entire bench.
So while the games don't get going for more than two weeks, the competition starts Thursday. And so do the expectations.

MLB - Futures 2010

The defending champion Yankees are returning nearly every key player from last season’s championship team.
The only question mark right now is free-agent slugger Johnny Damon, who remains unsigned and appears unlikely to be headed back to the Bronx Bombers.
After the World Series win, Damon told the Yankees he wanted to re-sign with the club – but only if it was for at least the $13 million he earned for the past four years. The Yankees balked and then signed first-baseman Nick Johnson and outfielder Randy Winn.
The odds for the Red Sox to win the Fall Classic may seem surprising, until you look at the number of significant moves the club has made during a busy off-season.
The Red Sox added outfielder Mike Cameron from the Milwaukee Brewers, and parted ways with outfielder Jason Bay, who signed a $66-million deal with the New York Mets. Boston also avoided arbitration issues by signing closer Jon Papelbon, as well as right-handed relievers Manny Delcarmen and Ramon Ramirez.
The Phillies have also made a number of changes after falling to the Yankees in six games in last fall’s World Series. And there’s no bigger than the acquisition of Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay.
The top six hitters in the line-up remain the same: Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, and Raul Ibanez.

Sabermetricians weigh in on 2010 season, spurring debate

The Yankees will once again rule in the AL East. The Rangers will supplant the Angels atop the AL West. And Joey Votto will put up some monster numbers for the Reds.
Those projections for the 2010 season are brought to you, respectively, by the increasingly familiar yet still difficult-to-understand statistical projection systems known as PECOTA, Marcel and CHONE.
These, along with others called CAIRO, ZiPS, FANS and maybe a few more that don't have strange anagrammed names, are soon to be the talk of the preseason.
What they all have in common is the ability to provide at least a general barometer for the current paths Major League clubs appear to be on -- and to raise the blood pressure of their hardball-obsessed followers.
And boy, are they fun to talk about.
"Baseball fans, and people in general, love to argue," said Dave Cameron, who analyzes stats for the popular site FanGraphs. "You can write absolutely anything, negative or positive, and people will manage to somehow accuse you of being biased about their teams".

So far, Baseball Prospectus' PECOTA has published final projected 2010 Major League standings, along with CHONE, the product of Maryland-based seamhead -- and Angels fan -- Sean Smith, and CAIRO, which is available on the baseball blog Revenge of the RLYW.
Meanwhile, ZiPS, created by sabermetrician Dan Szymborski of the Baseball Think Factory site, and Marcel, the brainchild of Seattle Mariners stats consultant Tom Tango, have released projected individual player results.

All told, the findings are provocative, to say the least.

Let's start with PECOTA, which was invented by Baseball Prospectus co-founder Nate Silver, who devised the projection formula and named it for Bill Pecota, the affable and ultimately forgettable infielder from the 1980s and '90s.
It stands for the Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm and it uses old-school and new-age hitting and pitching stats and defensive metrics, adjusts for stadium variances and injuries, and compares current players to players with similar stats in baseball history to compile "player cards." When all of the cards are stacked in their proper order on 25-man rosters, the overall MLB standings are computed.
"A lot of what we do at Baseball Prospectus is try and debunk or improve upon conventional wisdom," Silver told MLB.com last year. "You see things about clutch hitting or batting average vs. on-base percentage, and we're trying to build a better mousetrap. Discussion in papers or on radio is not as well-informed as to what really goes into winning baseball games."
Silver's system pulled off a big-time stunner when it nailed the Tampa Bay Rays as projected American League East champions prior to the 2008 season.
Then Silver stunned Beltway insiders later that year when his statistics-driven political projection site, FiveThirtyEight.com, gained national attention by predicting Barack Obama's victory over John McCain in the presidential election by 6.1 percentage points (Obama won by 7.0). Silver has devoted most of his time to that site -- and to a book deal.
That leaves PECOTA in the hands of Prospectus co-founder Clay Davenport, who has ironed out a few bugs and most surprisingly projects the Texas Rangers as the runaway AL West winners, while the three-time defending division champion Angels will finish below .500 at 80-82.
Not surprisingly, the Yankees are on top of the AL East at 94-68, a couple of games ahead of the Red Sox, and the Rays are in third place at 90-72. Other than those three teams, no other club in the Majors is predicted to crack 90 wins.
Last year, PECOTA nailed the Yankees as World Series winners but also picked the Cleveland Indians, New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks to win their divisions. None of those three had winning records.
"Doing these projections, we simply can't predict injuries and we can't predict trades that might happen in the middle of the season," Davenport says. "But we're driving the conversation until the season starts."
Down in Maryland, Smith is doing the same thing with his just-released CHONE rankings, but he's personally having a tough time with it.
"For the first time since 2006, I had to pick someone besides the Angels to win the AL West," says Smith, who in part named CHONE after his favorite player, former Angels spark plug Chone Figgins, and later gave it the name Comprehensive Holistic Objective Numerical Estimations.
Last year, CHONE also picked the Yankees as the best team in baseball and correctly tabbed the Phillies, Dodgers and Angels to win their divisions. But the system also picked the Indians and Cubs. This year, Smith's Halos just don't make the cut.
"By the numbers, they just come out to be average across the board," said Smith, who also has the Rangers winning the division at 86-76, with the Angels at .500 and five games back.
"For them to win it, they're going to have to get the Ervin Santana of 2008 and the Scott Kazmir of 2007. Also, Kendry Morales is going to have to prove that last year wasn't a fluke and Howie Kendrick is going to have to play well for a full season. And it wouldn't hurt if Brandon Wood did well at third base."
CHONE, like PECOTA, has only three teams in all of the Major Leagues with more than 90 wins -- the Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals. Smith explained that you'll often see lower-than-expected numbers overall in the projection game, which often doesn't forecast extremes.
"What you have in an actual season is the true talent of the teams and what they actually do," Smith said.
"Some teams get a little lucky, some teams don't, some teams have career years all over the roster, some have injuries. So most estimates are on the conservative side because the observed differences are often much more severe than what really happens."
Tango's Marcel projections, available at TangoTiger.net, might be the most humorously named, taking its moniker from the pet monkey on the TV show "Friends."
He considers it a system that any "monkey" can run because it merely takes into account past performance by players over the three most recent years, weighing the latest seasons more heavily, regressing the performances to the league average based on plate appearances or innings pitched and applying an age adjustment.
CAIRO, meanwhile, has one reasonably surprising result, with the Chicago White Sox coming out on top of the AL Central and the Cincinnati Reds winning 84 games and looking like serious Wild Card contenders in the National League.
Written clearly on the Revenge of the RLYW blog, under the links for the 2010 CAIRO standings and pitching statistics, is a warning that might offer a healthy approach to all of these projections: "... these are EXTREMELY PRELIMINARY and SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN TOO SERIOUSLY."
As Cameron says, the sooner passionate fans can understand that, the better.
"There's a big difference between predictions and projections," he says. "People need to understand that projections are more about understanding the path a team is on, not exactly where they'll finish in 2010. These are not predictions.

Los Galacticos

Bueno, yo no he ganado nada con mis apuestas y esto es porque soy tonto, ya que lo unico que tenia muy claro para hoy - y lo tenia claro desde hace semanas - era la derrota del gran Real Madrid, y era la unica apuesta que tenia que hacer hoy, pero luego me pongo a poner otros pronosticos y asi se jode tambien lo que tenia claro.
Aqui todavia no se han dado cuenta que el Real Madrid es un gran equipo cuando se trata de ganar al Xerex o al Osasusa o no se que, pero si hablamos de Champions League no entiendo y nunca voy a entender la presuncion ciega que caracteriza este pais y, especialmente, cuando se habla de los Galacticos o en general de cualquier cosa que sea España contra cualquier cosa que no sea España.
Siguen pensando de ser el centro del mundo, mientras solo son y siempre seran una provincia del imperio.
Los Galacticos han perdido, 1-0, contra el Lyon, un equipo de nivel medio-bajo en europa, y hoy mismo podria apostar que el Real Madrid ya esta eliminado de la Champions.
Bueno, sencillamente tengo que aprender la leccion o sea jugarme lo que està muy claro (para mi) a pesar de todo lo que he ido leyendo hoy mismo por todos los blogs (que de verdad son divertidos) o sea que los Galacticos de los imparables Ronaldo, Kaka, Higuain (hay alguien que de verdad piensa que Higuain sea un campeon?) de ninguna forma podian peder sino que iban a ganar facilmente (y cualquier opinion diferente seria solo un remar en contra..).
Soy tonto, y por esto pierdo mis apuestas.
