MLB Hot Lines

OAK @ 1.65

I’m going to stick with the Canadian theme today and go with Victoria, British Columbia right-hander Rich Harden. Well, that and the fact the A’s are 11-1 in their last 12 games.

Oakland is finally being slated as a regular heavy favorite and today’s odds are actually decent compared to the numbers they’ve seen this week. The A’s were pegged at –160 or higher in all but one of their previous six games and they proved to be worth the price every time.

It took oddsmakers six games initially, however, to catch on to Oakland’s current hot streak. During the first six games of the tear, the A’s were underdogs five times and –103 in the other contest. They went 5-1 in those efforts before sportsbooks decided they’d better start curbing their losses.

Sounds strange, but at –150 today, the A’s are strong value against the team with the best record in baseball.

WAS @ 2.3

Washington - or more fittingly on this day, the former Montreal Expos - is more than anxious to hit the road this weekend. Not only does the Nats` home field, RFK Stadium, have a crappy pitcher`s mound and a shoddy field, but now you can add security issues to their growing list of grievances.

Earlier this week outfielder Marlon Byrd had his black Cadillac Escalade stolen from the fenced-in parking area at RFK that`s designated for players and employees. Eleven other players and staff had their vehicles either vandalized or burlarized according to a report in the Washington Times. Among the items stolen were golf clubs, credit cards, and G.P.S. navigating systems.

"There`s a lot of unhappy people in this locker room," said outfielder Ryan Church, one of the players victimized.

Team and stadium officials are looking into the matter.

ATL @ 1.69

According to Philadelphia closer Billy Wagner, the Phillies are only missing one key element.

""The know-how to win," he told reporters yesterday after his club lost its eighth outing in its last 10 games in a 5-3 decisiion to the Mets. "You`ve got to know how to win before you can start thinking about playoffs."

Wagner says the Phillies have no shot at lasting to October the way they`re playing right now, even though they`re only 7 1/2 games back in the National League East. It`s tough to argue based on their recent record.

The news goes from bad to worse for Philly, however. John Smoltz takes the hill tonight for the Braves. Smoltz has won his last four starts and he went nine innings in three of those efforts. He could only go eight innings in the other win. He must be getting old, I guess.
