Hot Lines: July Fourth

MIL @ 1.91

The Marlins are expecting a big Fourth of July crowd for today`s game against the Brewers in a contest that will be followed by a fireworks show at Dolphins Stadium. Normally that`s a good thing for the home side. But today it just means rookie southpaw Scott Olsen will be gripping the ball a little tighter. Olsen only has one major league start under his belt.

The lefty only allowed one hit June 25 against the Devil Rays in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-2 Marlins win, but Olsen was filling in for an injured Josh Beckett that day. This time around he`s a legitimate starter in the rotation following Al Leiter`s demotion of to the bullpen.

All eyes will be on Olsen to see what he can do.

LAD-COL under 12 @ 1.91

It’s a minor miracle the Dodgers only lost J.D. Drew to injury last night at the rate D-Backs rookie hurler Brad Halsey was corking batters. Halsey nailed three hitters in 5 1/3 innings and the one that drilled Drew broke the outfielder’s left wrist. The Dodgers’ home run leader (15) is likely out six to eight weeks.

L.A. has had 14 players on the DL throughout this season and the current names on the list include Drew’s fellow outfielders Milton Bradley (finger) and Ricky Ledee (hamstring). With all that hitting power sucked from the lineup, the under has cashed in 14 of the Dodgers’ last 20 games.

It doesn’t hurt tonight that Jeff Weaver takes the mound for them tonight, either. The under has prevailed in his last five starts and he carries a 1.77 ERA through his last three outings.

SF @ 1.72

Chances are Reds righty Elizardo Ramirez isn’t going to toss a complete game today. He’s bounced between the bullpen and the starting rotation this season and he’s lost all three of his starts in a combined 15 2/3 innings.

That’s a scary thought because Cincy’s bullpen hasn’t exactly been reliable lately. Over the past five games the pen has given up at least three earned runs on three occasions and Todd Coffey gave up four earned runs last night in one inning of relief in a 9-0 loss to the Astros. Cincy starter Brad Claussen allowed four runs – all unearned - in six innings.
