Toronto Argonauts vs Montreal Alouettes

These two teams have not yet met in 2005 however they did meet three times in 2004 in the regular season with Montreal winning all three games by scores of 19-9 and 58-20 in Montreal as well as 22-10 in Toronto.

Keep in mind however these two teams met in the 2004 Eastern Final in Montreal where it was the Toronto Argonauts who came out on top by a 28-16 score …. It should be noted Calvillo was injured early in that game and clearly Montreal was a different team with Qb Ted White leading the Cavalry.

The Toronto Argonauts arrive in Montreal Thursday Night sporting a 2-2 record which is good enough for a three way tie atop the Eastern Division.

Of note with the Argo’s is that they had the bye week last weekend having played their last game back on July 15th when they were beaten 30-22 by the BC Lions.

Also keep in mind this is a double weekend for the Argo’s as the schedule makers have them returning home to Toronto to meet the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Monday , August 1st.

Montreal enters this contest with the identical 2-2 record however they are stinging after losing last weekend to the now 1-4 Blue Bombers.

This should be a fairly tight football game featuring two very talented teams that were or rather are both expected to finish the season well above a 500% winning percentage. Barring a rare tie one of these teams will actually drop below 500% after their fifth game …. Clearly then this is a huge game for both.

Toronto has lost games by 7 and 8 while winning by 1 and 6 so with TO and their tough defense you can expect a close game.

Montreal has lost by 3 ( OT ) and 5 while winning by 10 and 3. The shocking thing for Montreal is giving up 90 points in two games on the road…. Fortunately for the Als this game is in Montreal where in two games they have given up 50 points.

Truth is this team in Montreal has for years been dominating at home. At home in Montreal they are 2-0 in 2005 ….were 8-1 in 2004 ….7-2 in 2003 ….7-2 in 2002 ..6-3 in 2001….and 7-2 in 2000. Combined at home then they are 37-10 in the new Millenium and 17-3 over the past 3 years. Those are heady numbers and after the embarrassing loss in Winnipeg last weekend they should be ready to go.

The Offense in Montreal has been pretty good ( averaging a league high 32.3 points per game ) while this veteran defense should be ready to roll….the problem the Al’s defense has had thus far has been stopping the run but Toronto brings the #9 ranked rush game to Montreal.

When you consider Toronto averages just 21.3 points per game the deck is stacked in Montreal’s Favor. Look for the Alouettes to win this one at home and cover the spread.

Montreal Alouettes - 6 @ 1.91
