MLB Hot Lines: today`s best odds

MIL-FLA over 7.5 @ 1.95

A.J. Burnett has been lights out this season, but don’t be fooled by his impressive 3.18 ERA – he’s no stranger to the over. The over/under is 8-7 in Burnett’s starts this season and when totals drop this low, you can’t help but jump that number. Add the unpredictable Tomo Ohka into that equation and the over looks even better. The Japanese right-hander has gone 3-1 since arriving in Milwaukee from Washington, but since a shutout in Tampa Bay in his debut, he’s racked up a 6.88 ERA and helped the over to three consecutive wins.

LAA @ 2.25

What the heck happened to Johan Santana? His streak of 16 straight road wins snapped like a rotten twig when he gave up six runs in five innings to the Brewers in his last road start. Now he’s got come back against a smoking hot Los Angeles club that`s hitting .323 against lefties like himself in its last 10 games. And he’s got to do it at Angel Stadium, where the Angels are 25-15.

But the thing I like most about this line – aside from getting the Angels as home dogs – is the name Paul Byrd on the pitching schedule for Los Angeles. The veteran has been going bananas over the last couple of months, including two complete games in his last three starts. That’s an important little tidbit for a team whose bullpen has been struggling since reliever Brendan "Pine Tar" Donnelly was suspended for nine games.

OAK @ 1.87

June was a good month for Joe Blanton. After a few horrible outings at the beginning of the season, the A’s young starter picked up the pieces and pulled it together last month for a 2.06 ERA and a 5-1 record worth about four units. All it took was a few minor changes like speeding up his delivery and varying the speed of his fastball, which he said he had previously been consistently coming in at 88-91 mph. July should bring more of the same, starting with a win over the Blue Jays tonight. The A’s have struggled in the second game of road trips, but in an attempt to change that, manager Ken Macha announced that any Athletics player showing up for tonight’s game before 4 p.m. will be fined.

The Jays have been struggling against right-handers and an injury to second baseman Orlando Hudson last night won’t help an infield that’s already missing Corey Koskie at third.

STL-ARI under 8.5 @ 2.05

Chris Carpenter isn’t going to give up much tonight. The Cards starter has thrown two complete-game shutouts in his last four starts and hits come about as frequently as Haley’s Comet when he’s on the hill. So if this game’s going to stay under the total, it will take a respectable performance from Javier Vazquez – another rare occurrence. But even though Vazquez has been smacked around a few times this year, he’s not bad enough to send this one over the total. The over/under on Vazquez is 6-10 this season.
