MLB Hot Lines: Tuesday’s best bets

BOS @ 1.95

Yes, the Rangers have been tearing the cover off the ball, but it’ll be interesting to see how they can handle Tim Wakefield’s knuckler.

The Texas lineup is full of guys who drool all over fastballs when they get ahead in the count, so at the very least, Wakefield’s floater is going to be a different look for them. Might be enough to keep them honest at least for the first few innings.

Betting on a knuckler is always sketchy, but you’ve gotta like the Sox at this price. You know they’ll be looking for big things after Keith Foulke turned a two-run lead in the ninth into a nightmare yesterday. Again.

LAA @ 1.61

I love the Angels when they’re coming off a loss and they just dropped a 7-5 decision to the Twinkies last night at –157.

They’ve won 74 percent of their games following a loss this year. Take a quick scan of Anaheim’s lineup and you’ll see why. Would you want to mess with Vladimir Guerrero and Co. when they’re ornery? That’s what Minnesota’s Scott Baker has to contend with today.

Who, you ask? Exactly. Guy’s got a grand total of one big league inning under his belt.

Meanwhile, Anaheim starter Ervin Santana is money after a bad outing. He’s answered his last two poor performances with dominating follow-ups. He went the distance in a 4-0 shutout back in May after getting beat up by the Indians and he struck out seven Dodgers while allowing just a single run in a 3-1 win at –147 on June 25.

PHI-PIT over 9 @ 1.91

What do you get when you mix a little Kip Wells with a bit of Jon Lieber? An over.

Lieber’s allowed at least four runs in nine of his last 10 starts and Wells couldn’t find the strike zone with a telescope.

Plus, I’m thinking yesterday’s 12-run outburst might get Philly’s bats going. Before then, the Phillies had scored three or fewer runs in 13 of their last 18 games.

"That`s baseball," manager Charlie Manuel said after Phillies backers cashed in at –113 with the 12-1 win. "You can win by 20 runs one night and lose by 20 the next. It`s hard to explain."

I’ll take 20 runs from either side tonight.
